What are ITIs:

ITI stands for Industrial Training Institutes and there are more than 5000 of these institutes in India. However, the quality of training at the ITIs is rather uneven. These ITIs produce 700,000 technicians each year. Improving their skill level would be a very powerful channel of advancing India ’s technical/manufacturing capabilities.

India is unable to compete against China in manufacturing world class products because of shortage of skilled technicians. The ITIs that train these technicians have bottlenecks like poor infrastructure, outdated curriculum, less qualified instructors and limited interaction with the industry.

The Government of India has launched a Centrally Sponsored Plan for upgrading selected it is into ‘Centers of Excellence”. This World Bank funded plan, co-coordinated by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, proposes to upgrade 500 ITIs.

The Pan-IIT program launch team feels that the ITIs need the following inputs:
  • Focus on Quality
  • Technical guidance
  • Faculty quality improvement
  • State-of-the-art equipment and teaching aides
  • Close interaction with the industry
  • Introduction of new courses in response to industry needs
